Over 50 percent of dogs and cats are overweight. Excess weight increases the risk of diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, and certain cancers. With commitment, most pets can achieve a healthy weight.

1. Body Condition Scoring

You should be able to feel your pet ribs with a slight fat covering, see a visible waist, and observe a tucked abdomen. If you cannot feel the ribs, your pet is likely overweight.

2. Designing a Weight Loss Plan

Reduce daily calories by 10-20 percent. Switch to a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. Measure portions with a kitchen scale. Treats should account for no more than 10 percent of daily calories.

3. Increasing Activity Safely

Gradually increase exercise. For dogs, add extra minutes to walks and incorporate swimming. For cats, use laser pointers and cat towers. Track progress with monthly weigh-ins.
