Adding a new pet to your household is exciting but can be stressful for existing pets. A rushed introduction can lead to fights and long-term behavioral problems.

1. Preparation Before Arrival

Set up a separate space with their own bed, food bowls, and toys. Swap bedding between animals a few days before so they can get accustomed to each other scents.

2. Dog-to-Dog Introductions

Introduce on neutral territory like a park. Walk them side by side at a distance. Look for relaxed body language: soft eyes, wagging tails, and play bows.

3. Introducing a Cat to a Dog

Keep the cat in a safe room for days. Exchange scents by swapping bedding. Feed on opposite sides of a closed door. Use a baby gate for visual introductions with the dog on a leash.

Expert FAQ

What if they fight?

Never physically intervene. Make a loud noise or spray water to separate them. Restart the introduction process more slowly. Consult a behaviorist if aggression persists.

Easier with a puppy?

Adult dogs often tolerate puppies better due to submissive behaviors. However, monitor closely and give the adult dog time away to decompress.
